Q & A with Sandy Jack at Satellite Productions

Does Satellite have a particular niche in the San Diego market?

Yes, our main clientele is in the TV commercial business. We do long format shows as well as corporate videos, trade show videos. We work closely with the networks and their sales reps. If they cant produce something in house, we can take the client from A to Z. Most of our work is direct with the client, and not as many producers as had been in the late 90’s early 2000.

What is your mix of commercials vs. corporate presentations vs. Online product?

Commercials are our main structure, and online is a product of many TV commercial, making the final spots into mov or wmv files for the client to upload directly. We are very fortunate to get all of our business by word of mouth. We have no sales staff and strive to make every client project top notch. From scheduling to dubbing or uploading spots, we are a small but mighty team.

Where is your business heading? / What is your biggest challenge?

We are following our clients needs. There are so many different production tools in this market, its hard to pick one or two that could accommodate everyone without going broke. We spend a lot of time weighing out our options and deciding down a path that makes it a win-win for the client.

Where are your producers, editors and technical support people coming from these days? (Do many come up from the inside)

Satellite has been around since 1980 in many different levels of staff based on needs. Over the years, we have fine tuned our inner office staff based on the needs of our clients. We hire several independent contractors from San Diego to keep our business in our town. Its very important to us that the San Diego independent market stays healthy in this tough economy. Our Technical support comes from the manufactures of the products we carry, as well and support staff we have used for many years. Support from contractors, talent agencies, technical are all very important to us, and we like keeping them busy.

Are job applicants well prepared for the direction the business is taking today?

This is a tough question. There are definitely not as many jobs in this business as in previous years. Because equipment technology has become easier to use for anyone who wants to open shop in their home. The most important thing applicants need to be aware of are the client, the client, the client.

We are extremely concerned with our clients leaving happy, every time. We work as a team, and hope that our clients think the same.
